Nine days after the sudden flood that claimed more than 200 lives along the Nepal‑China border, two workers were rescued alive from the tunnel of the Trishuli 3A Hydroelectric Power Plant. The Nepal Electricity Authority reported that the workers, Sanjaya Shah and Kabir Maharjan, had been trapped in the tunnel filled with mud and debris. Rescue teams heard sounds from inside the tunnel and estimated that at least 39 more workers were still inside.

The team broke through 50‑60 metre of debris that blocked the tunnel entrance, pumped air into the shaft, and dug through the mud and rubble. When Shah and Maharjan emerged, they were in good condition but had injuries on their hands and legs that were likely caused by crawling through the tunnel, and they were suffering from oxygen deprivation. They were immediately flown by helicopter to a hospital for further treatment.

Authorities say 39 more workers may still be in the tunnel, though their status is unknown, and that more than 150 people could still be trapped in tunnels at other hydroelectric plants in Nepal. Arnold Dix, president of the International Tunnel Academy, called the rescue a hopeful development after days of effort. The flood’s cause is still under investigation, with early assessments suggesting it may have been triggered by an ice‑slide.
